Presentation Abstract:
This study demonstrates the applicability and performance of the space-time multiscale composites failure model developed at the Multiscale Computational Mechanics Laboratory at Vanderbilt University for the life prediction of advanced aerospace composites. The study was performed as a part of an Air Force investigation entitled “Assess and Quantify the Benefits of Applying Damage Tolerant Design Principles to Advanced Composite Aircraft Structure.” The failure model employed is based on the symmetric eigendeformation-based reduced order homogenization method. The proposed model predicts macroscale failure as initiation, growth and accumulation of damage mechanisms that occur at the scale of the composite constituents. The model is exercised to predict the stiffness and strength a quasi-isotropic layup of a graphite epoxy composite subjected to tension and compression. The comparison of the results of the fully blind predictions to experiments demonstrated high accuracy of the proposed model in capturing detailed failure mechanisms in various composite layups under both tensile and compressive loading.
