The Cosmic Calendar

The Cosmic Calendar is truly an eye-opening visualization of the entire age of our universe. It shrinks the entire 13.8 billion years that the universe has been around into one calendar year where each second equates to a few hundred years. The birth of the human species and just how little we have been around compared to the rest of the cosmos is by far the most staggering realization that I made. Since this is in fact a calendar, there are a few important dates that are relevant to our planet and our species. The Big Bang occurred on January 1st at midnight, the Milky Way was formed on March 16th, the Sun and the Solar System were born around September 2nd, and humans as we know them today did not appear until December 31st at 11:54 PM. So, in essence, humans have only been around for a mere five minutes on this calendar, yet we have made massive impacts on our planet that has been around for almost four months. Below is an image depicting the Cosmic Calendar.

By me

This is a picture I took while studying abroad last fall; it’s a picture of the church I lived down the street from, during the holiday season when there was a christmas market in the square in front of it. I loved walking through this square every day and looking up at the beautiful facade.

Introductions

Hello! My name is Michaela. One interesting thing about me is that I am in a rock band! I play keys, guitar, flute, and I sing harmonies. My band went on a national tour opening for Counting Crows in 2014, and even played the Ryman Auditorium here in Nashville! Here is a shot from the last show in LA with the Crows:

More pics from the tour are here on my Instagram.

I’m the one on the right–the only girl in the picture!

I’m looking forward to blogging about all the things we learn this semester about the Solar System!

The Lunar Cycle

NASA

The moon completes it orbit around Earth every 29.5 days, creating the lunar cycle. The most interesting thing I learned from the Chapter 2 reading was that the word “month” is meant to sound like “moon” – I’m surprised I never knew the origin of the word before! As the moon orbits Earth, we are able to see different portions of it illuminated, which is why we have a new moon,  a full moon, and everything in between. The moon goes through a series of phases, as it grows by waxing and shrinks by waning. I found this game online and it’s a cute way for kids to get a better sense of the phases of the moon. Give it a try – it’s a fun puzzle to remind us how we, as observers on Earth, can watch the moon change each day of the month.
