An Unobstructed View

If you had to guess where the above picture was taken, what would you say?

Iceland? Northern Canada? Alaska? Finland?

Believe it or not, the above picture was taken in northern Michigan at Headlands International Dark Sky Park. This park is located west of Mackinaw City and encompasses two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline.

Headlands became one of the first ten International Dark Sky Parks in the world in 2011 after a rigorous application and review process. One part of this application includes a detailed account of each light fixture on the property and their output. The application also includes a section where the applicant must show how the park will be used for public outreach and education about the valuable resource that is our night sky.

The designation of Dark Sky Park allows the park to be protected from development forever and gives strict regulations for development in the surrounding county.

I spent the summer working in northern Michigan and had the pleasure of visiting this park. While I was there, I spent to close to two hours sitting and watching the Northern Lights, an experience I will never forget.

There are currently twenty-two other Dark Sky parks in the United States, and I hope more are created in the coming years so other people have the chance to experience the same kind of awe as I did. If you live near a Dark Sky park I highly encourage you to visit!

A list can be found here: List of International Dark Sky Parks

Look, Ma! I Got a Blog!

Hello there! My name is Shelby. I am a senior at Vanderbilt studying physics. I am a member of the NROTC program and will commission as a Naval Officer when I graduate in May.

I am starting this blog as part of a class I’m taking called “The Solar System”. I’m in this class because I needed one more elective class for my major. I already took “Theories of the Universe” and “Principles of Astrophysics” and loved them, so enrolling in another Astronomy course only made sense!

I really like space and shows related to space travel. It’s kind of a chicken and the egg type problem, I’m not sure if I like sci-fi because I like physics or if I like physics because I like sci-fi. Either way, I’m a huge fan of Star Trek (TOS is bae) and Dr. Who (both new and classic). One of my New Year’s resolutions is to knit the fourth doctor’s scarf!

And here I am at last year’s Way Late Play Date at the Adventure Science Center:

I can’t wait to explore “all of time and space” with you!:)

A Piece of Me

Just a simple picture of me that I took. I’m not much of a selfie taker.

ASTR2110: Blog 0

Hi there, I’m Lindsey! This is my blog. For this semester, most of my posts will be related to a course I’m taking at Vanderbilt University – Astronomy 2210: The Solar System.

Here is a picture of me to put a face to the voice behind the words.

Is that not the largest bowl you’ve ever seen? I was cooking for a LOT of people (which, coincidentally, are two things I really like – cooking and people).

Looking forward to a wonderful, starry semester!

The Size of the Universe

ET.jpg
People

After reading our first assignment in the text, I am stunned by the size of the universe. Our book, The Cosmic Perspective, asks us to imagine that there are 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the observable universe. And then there are more beyond that, over 14 billion light years away! Now I’m thinking about how many planets there must be. Let’s just assume the average star has 9 planets orbiting it, like our Sun, if we count Pluto. That would be 90,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in the observable universe alone! Among that many planets, it seems likely that there are some that can support life, which made me think of the beloved character E.T., pictured above. The realization of how vast the universe is has astounded me, but I look forward to investigating it further throughout the semester.

Welcome to my Solar Systems blog! I look forward to posting here throughout the semester.

This is one of my favorite pictures. Last summer, I taught at an amazing school in India and this was the view from my study hall classroom every evening!
