Country-Specific Resources

You may also find the following websites to be very useful in providing practical advice about daily living and culture:

Students should allow themselves plenty of time to familiarize themselves with country-specific information, including current cultural customs, language, and history. Do not wait until your airplane ride to begin studying about your site!

Prepare in advance! Review historical, political, geographic, and cultural information about your site. Tools may include:

  • Online resources (e.g. CIA World Factbook; Frommer’s; Lonely Planet etc.) You may also take note of numerous discounts available for students while traveling abroad, depending on location, such as Hostel WorldSTA Travel, and Student Universe.
  • Library (travel books, history books, sometimes even novels. Use librarians to help!)
  • On-site contacts
  • Students who have traveled to the site previously or students who are from this country
  • Faculty and staff, especially at VIGH
  • Subscribe to weekly news reports via popular media outlets in the target country or google’s weekly news update.

Found other helpful information? We’d love to share it with future students!
We don’t have resources for where you’re traveling to? Create a handbook when you return so other students can learn from you!
Send any recommendations for additional resources that would be helpful to Vanderbilt travelers to Elizabeth Rose (elizabeth.rose@vumc.org).
