Zodiacs

zodiac_constellations

Many people are familiar with zodiac signs; as kids we often look at them for weekly, daily, or monthly advice from things ranging from crushes to personalities. Whether or not our zodiac sign determines who we are, the constellations they are based off on is entirely a reality. Each month, as the Earth moves around the sun on its orbit, a new constellation appears behind the sun (that month’s designated zodiac). Like the stars and the sun itself, these constellations rise and set in the sky as the Earth rotates on its axis. The further the Earth moves along in its orbit, the earlier we can see these constellations. Why we associate a cluster of stars with our daily lives and believe they influence who we are as people is definitely beyond my understanding, however it is interesting to finally see where the various signs come from. The zodiacs appear at the same time each year and move slowly across the sky as we move through the seasons. Were our earth to move in the opposite orbit, we would see the same east to west rise and fall of the constellations on the daily, however the movement of the constellations throughout the year would reverse entirely.

equinoxes-and-solstice
from timeanddate.com

This last week we looked deeply into the movement of the sun throughout the year. Without discussing it, we were inherently learning about solstices and equinoxes, a topic I find interesting. The homework we did helped confirm what I already knew: the most daylight occurs on the summer solstice (June 21) and the least on the winter solstice (December 21). The first thing I didn’t fully realize is that in the southern hemisphere, these dates are swapped. Things must be really weird down there. How do they draw maps?

But a more interesting realization I had involved the equinoxes. I saw that there were two dates where locations at different latitudes roughly got the same amount of daylight. These dates were the fall and spring equinoxes. I wondered briefly how this could be, but the diagram above helped me. The equinoxes are the points in the revolution where Earth’s tilt is not directed towards or away from the Sun, so all spots on Earth receiving daylight at any given time are all receiving roughly equal amounts. But in hindsight it makes a lot of sense, it’s kind of in the name.

The Zodiac Signs

The zodiac signs surround a lot of peoples’ daily lives, in that most people look to a horoscope to direct their lives. The fact that the position of the stars at a certain time can tell so much about a person’s individual personality is absurd, yet we attribute personality traits to the constellations. The constellations of the zodiac also detail the Sun’s current position relative to the night sky and current season.

Phases of the Moon

Moon Phases Video Link

I enjoyed this video from the history channel, which shows phases of the moon. It was interestingly relevant to my last post, since the image of the moon and Earth is so entirely NOT to scale because they are so large, and so close together. However, I did enjoy the explicit way that they explained each phase of the moon, and dispelled the myth that the phases of the moon occur as a result of the shadow of the Earth. It also offered recommendations on the best times to observe the moon! Overall a good overview of moon phases, even if it was a tad misleading concerning size and scale.

Solstices and Equinoxes

Astrology plays an important roles in ancient civilizations like Egypt ,Sumeria and China.Because their deep connections to agricultures and societies, solstices and equinoxes were celebrated by both nobles and civilians in China for over a thousand years. And this blog is intended  to introduce some activities and customs popular on these four special days.On spring equinox, people in the capital will hold ceremonies to celebrate the coming of spring and offer sacrifices to their ancestors in exchange for blessing the harvest, while farmers in the countryside would begin their cultivation for the next year with children flying kites in the fields. On summer solstice, all citizens will have a three-day holiday(though I don’t know why) and many would like to eat mutton and beef because they believe that such diets will enhance their resistance to epidemics that are prevalent in the summer. On autumn equinox, governments will hold rituals to celebrate the harvest of this year and farmers will offer parts of their gains to the government on certain days around the autumn equinox. And on winter solstice, people will also celebrate it as the day of shortest sunlight time and have warm foods to avoid the invasion of diseases.

Blog 2: AstroLOGY

I’ve always been intrigued by Zodiac symbols and the origin of astrology. To be honest, when I was in third grade and we were told that we were going to be doing an astronomy unit, I genuinely believed we were going to be learning about our Zodiac signs. To say the least, I was extremely disappointed when we didn’t discuss how the fate of our lives and days were affected by the cosmos, and after third grade, I sort of gave up on astrology. However, since being in this astronomy class and learning about the Zodiacs, I have a new found interest in them, although not in the way I used to. Even after being in class for a couple weeks, my mind has started thinking about the vastness of the universe and how small that makes me feel. I think most people submit to reading about astrology and their Zodiac not because they really believe it, but rather because it gives people a way to connect to a universe that is so large, so endless. It gives people a way to feel like they are part of something bigger, and I don’t blame anyone for trying to connect with the stars.

The size and scale of the solar system

This is a screenshot of “Earth” from the video, whose link is listed above the photo. Go watch it!

I thought this video was a fascinating new way to consider both the size and scale of the Solar System in one experience; so often orbits in images of our Solar System are to scale compared to each other, but not compared to the size of the planets. Instead, often the planets are far too big to be correct. I have seen videos that attempt to show the relative size of parts of space, but so often they use household objects compared to each other, which is hard to really abstractly understand. I consider this to be an excellent representation that allows viewers to truly see and consider the size of our solar system in a tangible way (and our own minuscule existence within it).

Traveling at the Speed of Light

Traveling at the speed of light is entirely impossible in this present day and age, and the question of whether or not we will be able to travel at such a high speed or faster is still unanswerable. The speed of light sets the speed limit for the universe, so that should mean that light speed is achievable, does it not? Theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre proposed a theory detailing a type of “warp drive” that, rather than surpassing the cosmic speed limit, instead goes around it by evenly creating a “small bubble” around a ship that allows the ship to move as quickly as the pilot would like. However, this would violate “the weak energy condition,” which is not always viable, but allegedly can produce strange happenings. Apparently, there have not currently been any violations, so Alcubierre’s theory is not entirely false, but lacks plausibility.

Here’s the link to the article in which I received my information:

Identity Crisis

Aquarius
The constellation Aquarius

I have, apparently, been living a lie. My entire life, I thought I was an Aquarius, yet I have recently come to learn that my astronomical Sun sign is off by nearly a month. Because of the phenomenon of precession (the work of the gravitational pull and the conservation of angular momentum to correct the bulge in the Earth), the position of the Sun among the stars is no longer in the same place as it was 2000 years ago when astrology was created. In all reality, the Sun may now be closest to Pisces on February 4. This little shock is entertaining considering the appeal of horoscopes and the occasional jolt of connection when I hear a stereotype or description of what an “Aquarius” is. This not only speaks to the tendency of people to see themselves in what they read, but is also a fun trick from the universe.
