Our main goal is to develop a creative solution to increase the density of Nashville neighborhoods. In downtown Nashville, old one-story buildings can be replaced with towering highrises to fit more people. But in these historic neighborhoods, homes are protected against completely being scrapped, and all buildings must resemble the original historic designs of the area.
Change is inevitable, especially in a city growing as fast as Nashville, but in communities such as these, it looks very different. This project aims to show ways of improvement for historic neighborhoods in Nashville that do not threaten the history or people within them.
DADUs offer a unique housing situation since the people living in the DADU will be not only on the property but within the backyard of the main homeowners. Therefore, DADUs must cater to a specific community. In some places in Nashville, DADUs have already been built to serve a couple of purposes: housing elderly relatives or close friends who need an independent place to stay, moving the original homeowners into the DADU when they can’t afford the property tax any longer or feel as though it’s time to downsize, and lastly housing local students. As students ourselves, we understand that housing can be very difficult to find in Nashville, especially around campuses close to downtown, like Vanderbilt and Belmont.
